How to shortlist universities for MS, masters, or graduation?

Embarking on the journey of higher studies abroad, especially in the USA, can be complex when selecting the right university. This guide aims to assist you in shortlisting universities for your Master of Science (MS) or any other program.

The process of shortlisting a foreign university depends on several crucial factors:

  1. Course/Stream of Interest: Your academic passion and chosen field of study should be considered foremost.
  2. On-Campus Placements and Career Prospects: Investigate the university’s track record in providing on-campus placement opportunities and the potential for your future career.
  3. Tuition Fees and Living Expenses: Assess the cost of tuition and the affordability of living in your chosen location.
  4. Financial Aid for International Students: Explore available financial aid options or scholarships for international students.
  5. Location Advantage for Off-Campus Jobs: Consider the location’s relevance in securing off-campus employment opportunities.
  6. University Ranking: Consider the university’s global and national ranking in your field.
  7. Acceptance Rate for International Students: Research the acceptance rate of international students to gauge your chances of admission.
  8. Course Duration: Understand your selected program’s duration and alignment with your goals.
  9. Course Difficulty: Assess the level of difficulty associated with your chosen courses.
  10. Local Weather: Consider the climate and weather conditions of the region where the university is located.
  11. Network: Explore the presence of friends, classmates, or relatives in the area for additional support.

Among these factors, your choice of course is paramount, as it plays a pivotal role in shaping your future. Engage with your seniors who have previously pursued similar courses abroad during the fall intake to gain valuable insights and feedback.

Once you have narrowed your course options to one or two, begin with a university search that aligns with your academic and career aspirations.

How many universities can I shortlist and manage risk?

WThere is no definitive rule book for determining the ideal number of universities to apply to or gauging the ease of acceptance. However, as a general guideline, students often apply to 8-10 universities, distributing them as follows:

  1. Ambitious (4): Ambitious universities have a low acceptance rate and fierce competition. Only the strongest profiles gain admission.
  2. Moderate (3): Moderate universities maintain a reasonable acceptance rate, and the chances of acceptance are above average, making them a realistic choice for your profile.
  3. Safe (2): Safe universities have a relatively high acceptance rate, offering a very good chance of admission, though it’s essential to remember that no acceptance is ever guaranteed.
These guidelines help you balance your applications to ensure a mix of aspirations and probabilities when applying to foreign universities.

Best time to choose and apply for a university:

When to apply is a common dilemma for students. Ideally, the application process should commence in the first week of November for those aiming for the Fall intake. For Spring intake, the process should start around September. Typically, engineering students opt for this timeline since they have university exams a month later, adding to the stress. Therefore, it’s advisable to have all the necessary application documents prepared by the beginning of November for the Fall intake or September for the Spring intake.

Once you’ve finalized your list of universities, the next step is to begin filling out the online application forms. For many universities, the application deadlines for the Fall intake typically fall in mid-December.

It’s crucial to verify these deadlines with the specific university, as some may extend into January or March, and others might employ a rolling admission process. On the other hand, spring intake deadlines tend to range from September to November.
